There are four main types of web servers, Apache, IIS, Nginx and LiteSpeed. Web servers use the HTTP to server the files that form web pages to users.

Apache Web Server

Apache web server is one of the most popular web servers developed by the apache software foundation. It is an open source software and supports almost all operating systems. Approximately 60% of the machines run on Apache web server.

It is a very stable web server in comparison to the other web servers. It is possible to install Apache on multiple different platforms successfully.

ISS Web Server

A Microsoft product, IIS is a server that offers all the features that Apache does, however due to IIS’ lack of open source, customising it is much harder. It supports all the platforms that run windows operating systems. Additionally, you also get Microsoft support if you have any issues.

 

Nginx Web Server

Nginx, similar to apache, is an open source web server. It comprises of IMAP/POP3 proxy server. The significant features offered by Nginx are high performance, stability, simple configuration and low resource usage which allows a cheaper server to run Nginx.

No threads are used to handle requests by Nginx, instead a highly scalable event-driven architecture that uses small and a predictable amount of memory under load is utilized.
